Social Media vs. Traditional Advertising

Wil Shroter is a successful entrepreneur out of Columbus and the Founder of the Go Big Network.  I have used Go Big in the past and think it’s a pretty neat concept.  Yesterday I received their newsletter and took a chance to read it as it is about something important to Koyonomy life and all people at large - Social Networks (AKA Web 2.0).  Just the other day I was explaining to a client that traditional advertising needs to change and agencies are behind the times.  Like Go Big’s newsletter points out, this could not be more true namely because Web 2.0 is still in its infancy and there are few expert/schmexperts to be hired by agencies.  The only agency that I am aware of that really gets is it Undercurrent.  Well, I’m sure there are more, but they are few and far between.  So what do you do in the meantime?  Jump in, try to find the right people who get it, and learn it on your own (or hire Undercurrent).  After all, it’s free, cheap and available to the world; most importantly, once people claim they are “experts” on Social Networks, it’s time to figure out what’s next!

Fumoola: Beta

Filed under: Marketing, New Products — Jay Yoo June 12, 2007 @ 9:34 am

We are getting ready to launch a new department on our site called Fumoola™. What the heck is that? Here is the definition:

Fumoola
Fu \’foo\ abbr [Chinese] Man, Master or Blessings, Effort
Fu \’foo\ abbr [Hacker Culture] Skill, Adeptness
Moola or moolah \’mū’lə\ n. [American Slang] Cash, Cashola, Money
Fumoola \’foomū’lə\ n. [Koyono Marketing] Money made from skill and luck.

In Chinese, “Fu” means man or laborer. In this contect Another meaning of “Fu” in Chinese is blessing or effort. Interestingly, people in Hacker Culture use “Fu” as a suffix to refer to skill or expertise. For example, one who is adept at scripting is said to be a master of “script-fu.”

At Koyono, when you combine “Fu” with “Moola” the intended meaning is hard earned money from skill and adeptness. Fumoola is extra money you made that allows you to afford the finer things in life. It’s more or less coincidental that Fumoola can also be interpreted as a certain kind of money that you need to earn to do your own thing; it needs no explanation for those of you running your own gig.

We are launching this beta service for those GAI customers that have “made it” and are looking to spend some of their Fumoola on hard to find apparel and accessories for travel, digital cargo transport and formal occasions when jeans and a t-shirt may not be appropriate. Of course, we will stay true to our minimalist aesthetic.

Foomula™ is a trademark of Koyono Company.

Acting small is tough for most marketers.

Here is a great video featuring Seth Godin on how Small is the New Big. It’s full of reasons why social media is changing how things get marketed by going to peer-to-peer, as opposed to more traditional approaches that simply try to buy people’s attention. Enjoy!
